When you open the door to a theater, you enter a new world. For the next few hours, you live a completely different life from the one outside. I remember how it felt to watch my first musical, The Sound of Music. My heartbeat faster when the bright lights turned on to reveal the mist-filled Austria of the Second World War. I knew that what I was seeing was an illusion: the beautiful set hid a complicated mess backstage. But I loved it.
